Attention the items you are bidding are ORIGINAL 1850ies tiles that arrived River Plate from France in great amounts. Were used in houses in patios and water piles both as decoration and to protect constructions from water splash. Also were used in cupolas in main churches of our country.
Recently Catalogued by Uruguay architect Artucio Ref. "Catalogo de Azulejos Franceces del Siglo XIX" each tile pattern was numbered, and more than 200 patterns were classified. This is an excellent work and reveals for instance that major ports for these tiles exportations was Montevideo (Uruguay capitol) and Argel (Algeria ).
These wonderful tiles ( azulejos carreaux ) are one of most exquisite item you can acquire for your home decor. They match very well either with traditional or modern architecture, used like accents or as in frieze in the outside. On stoves and fireplace with wood, summing up they will go well with everything. Mixing different patterns is a good idea too, as you will have a uniform looking as all these tiles were done using the same white tone and just blue and dark violet but also variety of patterns. Also the "geometric key" is always the same diagonal directions mixed with vertical and horizontal.
ITEM DESCRIPTION
STYLE: Vernacular aesthetic style, geometrical forms and floral abstractions these tiles have an unique stile as were done with stencil differing a lot from those done using brushes for instance you can see there are rather the dash dot instead of solid lines.
TECHNIQUE: First, kneading, cutting and drying of the part, all handcrafted. Then, a first burn making the so called biscuit. While this was in process the enamel was prepared by mixing fusion, of tin oxide and lead oxide, sand, sea salt forming a solution. With this solution the tiles were bath, and naturally dried, once dry, a stencil usually of tin, with the design draft was placed on each piece and with a sponger or brush the cobalt oxide (to get blues) or manganese oxide ( to get violet ) was placed one by one on tiles. Finally the definitive burn and piece ended.
COLORS: White background and 1 or 2 colors. Cobalt blue and dark violet. But seldom yellow or green. The blue and violet slight dye the white background conferring the piece an unique characteristic.
ORIGIN: France , Pas Calais department, Desvres or Beauvais villes.
MARKS: Each tile has a stamp on reverse done in biscuit, with the name of the factory (around 30 different factories existed ) This is of great help when identifying them.
DIMENSIONS: 4.3 x 4.3 inches each tile (11 x 11 centimeters)
APPROXIMATE DATE: Between 1840 to 1900
ITEM CONDITION Very fine to extremelly fine condition for these kind of tiles. Them are essentially not perfect as they are done in a very handicraft way. There remains its value, in that lovely imperfection. Look the tiles have not smooth surface and each design is different from the other. But most important, colors are always the same.. ! there are no shades as always the same minerals were used for the same colors. Regarding this bear in mind this items are hand painted using cardboard or tin design molds so each tile is different from other, sharp edges are never found as well nor plain surfaces etc. This almost 200 year old pieces are just that, 200 year pieces.
You will see a chip here and there but that is normal as we explained. You will have no problem to solve this when reinstalling .

Also colors painting etc are the same with minimal imperceptible variations as these items were done in a handcrafted way.
